Mangersta

The cliffs in the area of Mangersta on the Isle of Lewis I would call the most spectacular in the Outer Hebrides. The pinnacles are numerous and very picturesque.

And these cliffs have some interesting stories to tell: such about an outlaw who used to hide in a cave here, well protected from the authorities and, more recently, about the St. Kilda opera , of which a part was directed here (Cliff Dance Duet).

The Ponies of Eriskay

Eriskay Pony

Eriskay Ponies live semi wild on the remote Isle of Eriskay, which belongs to the Outer Hebrides. The breed was kept on this isolated place already during the times of the picts. It is very silent there. About 200 humans live on Eriskay. So there is much space left for these strong ponies to roam. They are not fed and have no horse stable, throughout the year.

I travelled to Eriskay several times, it became one of my favourite islands of the Hebrides. Always sleeping in a tent inmidst the natural environment of these ponies. The original photographs are colour slides. The scans where processed with HDR-software Photomatix and converted into greyscale. I wanted to enhance the wild and mystical appearance of these animals and the surroundings.

This is my first post to this new blog. Hope you like the images.

And here you can read an article about the ponies online (page 10).
